The First Lady and the Paralympic Games

I recently had the honor of hearing First Lady Michelle Obama pay tribute to over 200 service men and women at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs at the opening of a six-day sports competition for wounded active duty soldiers and veterans.

These wounded soldiers are using sports not only as a vehicle for rehabilitation, but as a way to challenge themselves physically, mentally and spiritually.  Maybe someday some of the athletes in attendance will go on to compete for Team USA in the Paralympic Games.

Often I get asked, why in the world do elite athletes need jobs?  Aren’t they all on cereal boxes, have big-money sponsors, and financially set for life?

For the majority of US Olympic and Paralympic athletes, nothing could be further from the truth.  Of course there are the few superstars everyone knows like Bruce Jenner, Michael Phelps, and Lindsey Vonn…but for every athlete that becomes a household name and makes it to the cereal aisle in your local grocery store, you have hundreds of others in lesser known sports struggling to balance their training while paying their bills.

Less than 100 Days until the London 2012 Games


Things are exciting here in Colorado Springs, the hub of Olympic activity in the United States! It is only 100 days until the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England and just hearing the first couple notes of that Olympic theme makes my heart beat just a little faster and goose bumps suddenly appear.  What? You didn’t know that Adecco is a big part of the Team behind Team USA?  Adecco is a proud sponsor of Team USA and partner of the United States Olympic Committee.

There will be just over 500 athletes representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games and approximately 200 U.S. athletes in the Paralympic Games this summer. However there are thousands of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls training every day to pursue their dream of competing on the world’s largest stage and Adecco has been there to support them with the Athlete Career Program.
