April’s labor market surprises with lower than expected numbers

After months of substantial job growth, the labor market finally slowed in April. With only 175,000 jobs added, the posted numbers were much lower than what economic experts predicted.

In addition, the unemployment rate increased to 3.9%, continuing a more than two-year long streak under 4%.

• April marks the highest unemployment rate since January 2022

• The labor force participation rate held steady at 62.7%

• Average hourly earnings rose 0.2%

• Healthcare and social assistance were behind almost half of the labor market growth, adding a combined 87,000 jobs

• Government hiring slowed, adding just 8,000 jobs. For the past year, the average has been 55,000

Navigate the unexpected

Many experts were expecting April to add 235,000 jobs—but similar to previous months, the labor market had other ideas.

That’s why it’s critical to have a staffing strategy that can evolve, whether it’s to changes in the national labor market or changes in your hometown.

Adecco has decades of experience partnering with organizations across the country, and we understand how to navigate the unexpected.
